Nostalgia is a great thing. Despite the fact that it is sometimes misused, and that some people miss the point of what made something so great, nostalgia, as a personal thing, is utterly fantastic. Being able to reach back into the past, will, in turn, allow you to unleash your inner child, and see the world through a lens of wonder. What's more, nostalgia lets us look at things without having to worry about any sort of adult issues clouding our judgement.

Some people love nostalgia so much so, that they make sure to shape their home in the style of their favorite era. From the days of The Great Gatsby all the way to the era of the Rolling Stones, people want to wrap themselves up in a certain time period, with all the comforts of modern day living intact.

One of the best ways of evoking all your favorite eras, is by using something that was undoubtedly ever-present when it came to construction. Tiles. Tiles are incredibly versatile, and with the right colour, and a few extra pieces, they can turn most rooms into your personal time capsule. And the best room to experiment in? The bathroom. Along with the bedroom, the bathroom is the most personal space in the house, so why not make it a true reflection of you, and time warp it back to your favorite days.

1. Clean retro

There's just something about the white and red brick style tiles that screams retro. Maybe it's the perfect symphony of the red and white colouring, the way that they don't interrupt one another. Or it's the spacing of the patterns, the white being the background, preparing the scene for the red to burst out a surprise us.

Whatever it is that really drives us, it goes without saying that this will satisfy all those looking for that flying 40's style.

2. Sunshine power

For those that want to relive the great hippie era of long hair and bright colours, this bathroom might just be perfect for tapping into your inner flower child. While using a single colour can sometime grow monotonous, the sheer force of bright and happy that comes from the yellow is absolutely astounding, and is definitely something you won't grow bored of.

Finally, if the colour wasn't enough, a large window will turn it up to eleven, and throw you back in time, straight to Woodstock.

3. Green swirls

Past eras have also been fasctinated with the oriental and nowhere was it more apparent than in Hollywood during the 1930's. Palm trees and incredible patterns were all the rage, turning homes into ornate and grandiose works of art.

This bathroom perfectly captures this period of time, the patterns drawing you in, and hypnotising you for hours. The green does a great job enhancing the Kaleidoscope effect, and really setting the vibe that was going around that time. If you're here to relive this great era, you can't go wrong with this design.

4. Swimming in aquamarine

Keeping this era going, this bathroom is actually a great mixture between the orientalist craze, and the classic 40's retro style that we had in the first picture. The designers do a great job mixing the two by clearly separating them, one on the floor, the other covering the walls.

The oriental pattern has the added bonus of being reflected by the silver sheen of the bathtub, really immersing the tub in the whole interplay of patterns. The nature of the game here is a great mix of eras, so if you can't decide between two periods, it's always possible to do both. This place is the perfect example of just that.

5. 1001 designs

If you want to truly encapsulate that whole period of time, this room is the absolute epitome of the orientalist obsession. Each pattern does it's own thing, ensuring that it'll capture your attention for years to come.

The interplay of the two main colours, blue and yellow, works well with a bathroom of any shape or size, meaning that if you've caught the orientalist bug, this the perfect way to scratch that itch.

6. Make it rain!

If you want to relive the opulence of Jay Gatsby's roaring twenties, why not use your tiles to shower the bathroom in gold. There's no reason why you shouldn't sometimes give in to your inner voices, and treat yourself with something as opulent as this.

For that added spark, we suggest installing a window near-by, thus enhancing the bright browns into something truly magical. Turn yourself into a million bucks every time you clean yourself, with a shower that the great Gatsby himself would approve of.

7. Go full Gatsby

If simply showering in gold isn't good enough for you, you can perfectly capture the true glamour of the era by completely transforming your bathroom into something worthy of a king. While the chandelier does a great job selling the opulence, the real standout here is the tiles wall, with the mirror hanging on it. Together, the tiles manage to create a beautiful and elaborate garden of white flowers.

The impact of the white is increased, thanks to the black background, upon which the plants grow. It goes without saying that the background is also made of tiles. Nothing says 20's affluence like tiles being used to create something beautiful.

8. Get into the 1970's

To tap into an underground scene during the 1970's, this stark black and white bathroom, made great by the chessboard floor tiles, will have you enticed by all the parallel lines.

If you're worried that your vintage obsession will get in the way of the rest of the style of your home, then this callback to the 70's will put those worries to rest. Just because you're trying to summon something from the past, doesn't mean that it can be friends with the present.

9. Return of the retro

If you miss the classic button up sensibility style of the early 40's, this bathroom will instantly fling you back to those calming times. While very basic, the tile patterning is incredibly effective. While the top half is completely black, it helps create a nice parallel with the rest of the room.

What's more, the the little black diamonds in the middle of all that white void are a great way of bringing all that white together, while somehow also managing to add a certain amount of class. Getting behind classic retro is always a great choice, and that fact that it mixes well with the modern aesthetic is an added bonus.

10. Mixing eras

Indecisiveness is the bane of humanity. When being presented with two equally great choices, sometimes just choosing one is an impossibility. Well, we're here to tell you that there is a perfect middle ground. Mixing eras can be a tricky thing to pull off, but as the designers here show us, keeping the two styles in their own corners works perfectly.

With the orientalist pushed into the shower corner, and the more flower power-y orange tiled wallpaper working it's magic around the rest of the room, a perfect harmony has been found, allowing you to enjoy the perks of both time periods. And if you're not sufficiently persuaded, look back at the fourth image, to see just how effective it can be.

11. Back in the 1960's

If you're going for something a bit more subtle, but still very clearly all about the flower power era, this tile style may be up your alley. Taking some cues from the orientalist style, the tiles twist and turn in such a way, that you could end up losing several hours just tracing them around.

The orange tinge works perfectly with open spaces, and it may be a great idea to throw in some plants for that added bit of green, just like in the picture above. if you're looking for twists to put on your vintage tiles, knotting them about is a great solution.

12. Rolling tiles

If this is the era you've been looking for, then wait no more. Perfectly capturing the mood of the later half of the 1960's, this room will blow any visitor away with it's stylish tile set up. While there's very little rhyme and reason behind some of these circles, this craziness only goes to further enhance the feeling of the era. The colours are simple yet effective. Playing around with shades here would've been a mistake as you could've lost the pop they were going for. If you want something that speaks clearly about a point in time, this is the place.
