Today's article is an absolute must-read for anyone in a tropical climate, because it's all about taking advantage of the glorious weather by sprucing up your outdoor area! Patio areas can end up being the focal point of a home in countries like Malaysia when it's just too hot to go indoors. Unfortunately many of us have to make do with really limited space due to the fact that homes are rapidly shrinking to accomodate the swelling populations of urban centres, but you know we love a challenge here at homify!

Today we're going to show you how to make a special outdoor area no matter how little space you have, because it's all about creativity coupled with know-how, two things our homify experts have in spades. So let's take a look at some of their fabulous solutions, and discuss how we can replicate them in our own patio areas!

1. Create a relaxing spot to recline

When you have limited space one failsafe approach is to keep things very simple. A comfy chair, and a small coffee table for your book and beverage are really all you need to create a relaxing spot to get a little alone time.

If you want to make it a little more exciting we recommend getting creative with the furniture like they have here, and with so many options available it's entirely up to your taste.

2. Use lighting to create space

Using some creative lighting, especially lighting plants and shrubs from underneath, is a great way to create a sense of space. Not only that but it lends your patio area a romantic ambience, perfect for enjoying an autumn evening.

3. Small pools

Just because your patio is small doesn't mean it can't be luxurious! There are plenty of choices for outdoor tubs and spa pools right here, it's simply a matter of finding one that will fit your patio area.

4. Decorate the area with pot plants

Filling your patio with pot plants is a great way to make up for a lack of a garden, and provide you with all the vibrant colours and lush greens that you need to make your outdoor area look fantastic.

There's really no wrong way to do this, just pack in as much greenery as you can, but planter boxes like this fantastic stone piece are a great way to maximise the available space.

5. Build a pergola

Pergolas are incredibly simple and incredibly elegant. Requiring nothing more than a few planks of wood, they can be a fun DIY project, or for the less adventurous any carpenter will be able to help you out.

A pergola will add a Mediterranean flavour to your patio area, and they also provide some protection; as you can see here they're great for hanging outdoor drapes, and you can sling a tarpaulin over the top if you're entertaining in the rain.

6. Build an outdoor breakfast bar

Breakfast bars are a great option for those of us with narrow patio area; they don't take much space, and you can seat multiple people. They're also a great spot to enjoy your morning coffee and newspaper.

7. An outdoor kitchen

We love the idea of enjoying a meal out on the patio, so make it even easier for yourself by installing an outdoor kitchen! Great for wood-fired ovens, and perfect for entertaining, it's a really fun way to use your outdoor space.

8. A barbecue

If the last idea seemed a little bit ambitious for your outdoor area, don't give up your culinary dreams just yet. Instead consider a barbecue.

There's really nothing more delicious than flame-grilled vegetables, and you can always find a barbecue to fit your space – just look at this tiny example which also doubles as a fire pit.

9. A comforting brazier

And speaking of fire pits, we highly recommend getting a brazier for your patio. The mesmerising flicker of flames will really warm the area up, perfect as winter approaches.

10. Luxurious comfort

The patio is the perfect place to spend a day in the sun, so ensure you've got plenty of comfortable places to sit. There's all kinds of new weather resistant materials for outdoor furniture, so you can go for sofas and couches like this one, or you can keep it as simple as cushions on the floor. Really all that matters is that you and your guests are as comfortable as possible!

There's so many ways to make your patio area fabulous, and this is just a small sample, so get creative! And remember to keep checking in here on homify for more fantastic ideas, like these tips for blank walls
