There's just something about a special scent — you're not always totally aware it's there, but when you walk into a room that has a certain smell, you're immediately hit with a memory of a time or place. (Remember how distinctive your grandma's house used to smell?). Create that effect in your home — or simply kick a room's stink — with these 5 tricks for making your home smell good:

Clean the sink

Notice a lingering stink? You may want to check the sink to make sure there isn't any rotting food blocking the drain. Add a few spurts of dish-washing soap to a jug of hot water and pour it down the sink to help soften and flush down any funky smelling debris. If the smell persists, pour in half a cup of baking soda while running warm water.

Drying herbs in the linen closet

To get your linens in the closet smelling fantastic, tie a bouquet of your favorite fresh herbs – like lavender, rosemary, or even citrus peelings – in a linen pouch and hang it to dry near the rest of the fabrics. The cotton fabrics will absorb the scent, making for a nice aroma every time you open the door and your clothes will carry the aroma with them wherever you use them, which is way better than the smell of mothballs!

Air cleaning plants

Some indoor plants purify the air while beautifying your home, such as Spider Plants, Dracaena, Peace Lilies, Boston Ferns, Bamboo Palms, and Aloe Vera. Many offer pleasant fragrances, too, like geraniums, Arabian jasmine, eucalyptus, gardenias, corsage orchids, and Cuban oregano.

Scented candles

Candles are an obvious way to make your home smell sweet, but clever placement cans increase their efficiency. Leaving them on the nightstand next to you when you sleep or by an airy spot in the kitchen will help the smell circulate faster, lending to a sweeter smelling abode.

Heat up your favorite fragrance

Simmer water in a small saucepan and add citrus slices, herbs, and spices. My favorite combination is orange peel, cinnamon sticks, cardamon, cloves, and a stick of vanilla which give off a heady holiday scent. Another tip is to bake up a storm! Nothing beats the aroma of warm baked goods. The smell of chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls, or banana bread fills the house with good old fashioned yumminess, like what your mom used to bake.
