Gardens can have a huge impact on a home. Not only do they increase the value of a property, they also have huge benefits for our own wellbeing, promoting health and tranquility, and encouraging us to spend more time outdoors. Unfortunately shrinking properties mean we often have a very limited space to work with, and you may have already decided that your outdoor area is simply too small for a garden. If this sounds like you, then read on, because we're going to change your mind!

Today we're looking at ways you can create a small garden using only a small corner of the house. You don't need a massive backyard to create a beautiful outdoor area, and with modern workloads seeing us spending long hours in the office, a small garden is a convenient and economical option. The gardens we're looking at come in all styles, whether they feature lush greenery, or the stripped back approach of the Japanese zen garden, so join us as we explore the options and you're sure to find something perfect for your home!

1. Al fresco dining

This garden is made entirely from planter boxes, some of which have been reserved for seating to create a lush and vibrant outdoor dining area.

2. Practical and beautiful

This is a fantastic idea that is as useful as it is beautiful. Using only a small corner of the driveway they have built a small garden around a unique sliding bike cabinet. The natural colour of the timber matches the green of the garden perfectly, and by building a planter box on top of the cabinet they have ensured there is as much plant life as possible, plus you can sleep safe knowing your bike is securely locked away!

3. Inspired by tradition

This is a slightly busier twist on the Japanese zen garden, using various colours of stones and bark as a base, and filling it with low maintenance dwarf shrubs that ensure the garden isn't too crowded.

4. Using the fence

Building a planter box on the terrace is a great way to beautify your outdoor area, but what makes this garden truly special is the way the plants are bursting through the fence creating the illusion of a vertical garden!

5. Mirrors

This is a classic tip from interior decorating that works just as well outside; if you only have a small area to work with a mirror will make it feel twice as big.

6. Bamboo planter boxes

These bamboo planter boxes blur the line between man-made and natural elements, as the organic colour of the bamboo looks like part of the plant life. If you love DIY then this is the perfect approach, as the messy construction only adds to the charm of this fantastic corner garden.

7. Neat and tidy

This immaculately manicured corner garden features a box seat that also doubles as storage, ideal for the garden supplies necessary to keep this area in such perfect condition!

8. A spa pool

Even with only a small corner you can still fit in a spa pool for the ultimate garden experience! This gorgeous area is enhanced by the wild grass, and creeping vines climbing up the wall, creating an intimate atmosphere to complement the romantic pool.

9. Around the barbecue

In an outdoor courtyard featuring a fantastic barbecue, the designers of this area have finished the look off by surrounding the planter boxes with pot plants to cram in as much greenery as possible!

10. Vertical gardens

The most space economical option is always going to be the vertical garden. There's a number of ways to approach a vertical garden, but the easiest is with floating box planters mounted to the wall like they've done here. Plus if you fill the planters with herbs your garden will smell divine, and be as useful in the kitchen as it is gorgeous!

11. Quick and easy

With a romantic sculpture, and plenty of pot plants you can create a luxuriant corner garden in an afternoon! This looks like the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee in amongst the fresh aromas of your plants.

It's simple to build a small garden, all you need is a little inspiration, motivation, and creativity! If you'd like to see what it takes to build a garden from scratch head over here!
