It always feels good when you are exploring hundreds of beautiful housing projects and you find a home like the one we are about to show you. Situated deep in a quiet and calming wooded area of the Ukraine, we find a home as modern and innovative as can be. Created and designed with great skill and taste by architect Aleksandr Zhydkov, this intriguing home sits atop a small clearing on the edge of a forest full of birch trees. The home itself is fashioned mostly from timber slats, which gives the exterior plenty of geometric and linear style. The architect intended to create a house that is greener – one that does not affect the environment in the same way many modern housing developments do. In doing so, he created a home that utilizes fewer trees. Now, let’s take the tour and you can see for yourself just how amazing this home really is!

Geometric timber exterior

Right off the bat, we can see a truly remarkable, intricate, and geometric façade that awes  and inspires all who look upon it. We can see how the home’s design exhibits a strong relationship with the surrounding forestry by reflecting nature in its natural form. It is the timber cladding that wraps around the exterior of the home that creates this look. The natural colour and texture of the wood complement the large, man-made glass windows and doors. And those large glass panes allow the inhabitants to seamlessly view the gorgeous surrounding landscape, bringing more of the outside feeling in. The wide deck protruding from the structure also helps with this sentiment – the residents can take two steps out of their home and find themselves in Mother Nature.

Serenity at its finest

As we step inside the home, we find ourselves in the lovely living area, which exudes a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The living room has a double high ceiling accompanied by those large windows we saw from the exterior. The wood paneling and exposed grey brick wall frame the fireplace and give the room a rustic and cozy touch. The soft azure blue colour of the elongated L-shaped sofa paired with a few white accent pillows adds to the calmness of the space, and the white interior walls create the sense of stillness. In the midst of all this calm and stillness, we are still given warm touches, thanks to the timber boards on the wall above the exposed brick.

A stunningly modern kitchen

The kitchen and the dining area of this home have been fused into one space, and in the architectural community, we call this an open plan kitchen. The open plan creates a spacious, modern, and functional space where friends and family can cook and simultaneously be a part of the entertainment, thanks to the lack of walls acting as boundaries between spaces. Neutral colours dominate the space, but the stylish combination of deep brown, beige, and white brings back that natural feeling in the midst of modernity.

Another intriguing element of this kitchen is the way the architect constructed the kitchen equipment. Notice how the refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher are built into the left wall. This allows for even more free space in the kitchen.

An admirable lounge area

As if the living room, kitchen and dining area weren’t enough to impress you, Aleksandr Zhydkov built an additional room for extra relaxation. Here we see the lounge area that also functions as a quiet reading room. As this architect loves to save on space and materials when building homes, the entire far wall of the lounge area has been made into a bookshelf – perfect for housing knick-knacks, displaying pictures, and of course the best place for your favourite books. The large windows and bright interior make the lounge area feel more open, and the natural light coming in from those windows instills a sense of tranquility. The neutral colours and contemporary furniture, rug, and hardwood floors provide the perfect amount of comfort and warmth for this home’s residents.

The master bedroom

Traveling upstairs, we find ourselves in the elegant master bedroom. The dark wooden walls and natural stone floors lend elegance, warmth, and unique style to the atmosphere. As with the other areas of the house, the master bedroom displays a neutral colour palette mixed with earth tones, and yet again, we are met with an alluring shade of blue to complement the other furnishings. This consistency throughout the home ensures the residents get the most out of natural light, which in turn adds comfort to each space. What’s more, this room is oriented to the east, so the residents can enjoy the rising of the sun at dawn. This window also provides a great view of the surrounding forestry, bringing more of that natural aspect back into the home.

Our last stop

We are finishing our tour of the house with a view of the en-suite bathroom connected to the master bedroom. The luxurious quality and décor of this washroom are meant to make us feel as if we are in a five-star hotel. This room comes complete with anything one could ever hope for in a washroom: a doubly long sink with a mirror to match, a wide spa-like bathtub, a built in towel rack, and even a bidet! The marble flooring and wooden paneling on the wall creates an opulent and comfortable atmosphere. And just like in every other room we’ve seen, the use of timber and installation of large windows adds a sense of the natural to the space and keeps it feeling open, fresh, and clean.
