Vaastu Shastra is a systematically organized body of knowledge on architecture and its effects on our holistic wellbeing. Because this is a form of science, its principles of design, layout, measurements, directions and space arrangement are backed with facts and proven experiments. So choosing to believe in the power of Vaastu and applying it for your home décor can prove to be extremely beneficial.

Some of the principles of Vaastu are based on ancient beliefs which no longer apply to a modern home. For example, one reason why the master bedroom was recommended in the south-west corner was because in ancient times, houses came with granaries in the south-west corner too. Hence the master bedroom was designed to be closer to the granaries, to be able to keep them safe at night.

With old practices gone for good, should the principles of Vaastu Shastra still apply for your home décor? The answer is yes, because several Vaastu tips have utilitarian and practical applications in modern homes. A core reason for this is that Vasstu Shastra closely works with the five elements of nature – earth, water, fire, wind and sky. These five elements comprise the secret behind the life force on earth, and hence incorporating them beneficially in your home can enhance your welfare.

The shape of your room

Vaastu dictates that the shape of your room should either be square or rectangle. Logically, both these shapes are perfect for the right utilisation of space rather than a round or a unevenly shaped room. It is a good thing that most modern houses typically have rooms in this shape. Oddities may be rooms that are on the top floors right below slanting roofs, or those fitted into a basement space. Ideally, it would be best to use such rooms for storage purposes rather than sleeping.

Doors which open by 90 degrees

Want to welcome good luck into your home? Then have the door open! A 90 degrees opening door is considered to allow adequate ventilation and influx of positive energy. So it is advisable to keep the space behind doors free from any obstructions.

Often bedroom doors come with lines of hooks behind them for hanging clothes or other daily usage items. But it is best to make a new space for such items, and give your doors the freedom to open fully. If you have a ‘mover’ or a door that doesn’t stay in place, add a stopper to keep the door wide open at all times.

Include a piece that brings serenity

Home décor pieces like murals, paintings, wall hangings, sculptures not only add aesthetic value, but also subtly alter your emotions and mood. Keeping objects that connect you with the five elements will bring you peace and enhance your wellbeing. So what kind of objects can you pick?

For connecting with earthy elements, murals made of clay with a rustic finish like those of Lord Buddha, or a set of earthen pots in varying symmetrical shapes can work wonders.

To usher in the influence of wind, bring home wind chimes and you will have nature play an impromptu symphony just for you. The gurgling sound of a happy stream is like being able to hear beauty. So to bond with water, you can choose a waterfall decorated with natural materials.

Welcome the positive energy of fire inside your home. A fireplace can be a wonderful addition to your living room and can accentuate the room’s stature. But, if you do not have the luxury to have one, you can bring fire into a corner of your home by adding candles.

The vast, bright and unending expanse of the sky can make you feel truly optimistic. And the best way to bring some sky or openness into your room, is by creating sliding glass doors or French windows which allow ample sunlight and air to permeate the indoors.

Colours for your room

Colours play an important role in bringing balance to our minds and stimulating our mood. Each room in our home has a different energy level and we can use colours to enhance that energy, to create a happy living environment.

Red, for example, is the colour of blood and fire, and is linked with desire and passion. Because red is also an extremely active colour, it shouldn’t be used in the bedroom. Your bedroom should ideally be coloured in hues of pink, to symbolize joy and happiness.

Green is believed to increase concentration and hence is an ideal colour for children’s bedroom to help them study. Yellow symbolizes wisdom and patience, and is a great colour for your office or prayer room. Orange signifies healthy relationships. Light hues of orange can be used for any room in your home.

Black is generally considered to be a negative colour and should be avoided. Purple indicates trust and can be used in light tones in any room. Blue is a great colour for a bedroom in a new home as it signifies new beginnings. And white is perfect for providing a contrast with other colours and reflects peace and harmony.

Lighting tips

Our homes usually feature three types of lighting. General lighting that provides widespread illumination, task lighting which focuses on a particular activity like cooking or reading, and accent lighting which highlights objects that we want the eye to follow.

Generally, a lot of activity happens in the kitchen in the morning. Hence it should be exposed to the morning sun and be in the south-east corner of your abode, which is also governed by fire. Similarly it is conducive to have the children’s bedroom in the west so that it catches the evening rays of the sun. This is because children are more likely to spend time in the room studying, during evenings.

Pick furniture according to Vaastu

Choosing the right material for your furniture and placing it in the proper direction, creates an overall harmony in your living space. Furniture vaastu suggests that you choose elements that are closest to nature.

Elegant and durable wooden furniture adds a whole new dimension to your home’s natural appeal. Several eco-friendly furniture pieces and fixtures made of bamboo are also all the rage these days. Do take extra care to avoid irregularly shaped furniture, and be sure to place them in the west or south direction.

Mirror position is vital

Mirrors are simple tools but need to be used very wisely in your home, as they may attract happiness or misfortune based on where you place them. For example, placing a mirror in front of the cash locker signifies doubling your cash and ensuring financial prosperity. Same goes for placing a mirror in front of the dining table. But mirrors placed right opposite the main door may reflect away the positive energy that enters your home. It is ideal to place square or rectangle mirrors against the walls in the north or east, around 4-5 feet above the floor.

The science of Vaastu shastra is an interesting but vast study area and even if you are a non-believer, you won’t lose anything by complying with some basic principles – at least the ones that appeal to your logical self.
