The Lancasters, London, Bowles & Wyer Bowles & Wyer Taman Gaya Eklektik

Set against a meticulously restored Grade II listed façade, said to be the longest in Europe, the communal gardens at The Lancasters are a modern take on an 18th century parterre with fashioned Box motifs rippling through a long rectangular space that is punctuated with a daring avenue of towering palm trees and a central water sculpture.

When we first saw the magnificent buildings, with views looking south across Hyde Park, we were reminded of the elegant sea-front architecture in Cannes and Nice and we wanted to create the same Riviera atmosphere in the design. We felt it was important to include period detailing, so we spent time looking at Victorian motifs and 18th century parterre gardens. We wanted our parterre design to have a contemporary edge and be unconstrained by hedged borders. We created a random, non-symmetrical design that had a swirling quality that undulated throughout the scheme.

We were particularly concerned that the gardens should be as exciting when seen from above as they would be viewed at ground level. We were also careful to repeat the parterre design in all sections of the garden, so giving a never-ending quality to the planting.

The Lancasters façade has emerged looking as stately as it did in 1850’s and we wanted create something that would add a modern twist whilst respecting the building’s heritage. The palm trees add a wonderful sense of frivolity to the scheme without obscuring the architectural details and the modern parterre garden is a subtle nod to traditional Victorian motifs that we wanted to achieve.
